Day 46: River days and meadows

June 4, Day 46: 705.6-721.8

Miles Hiked: 16.2

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for short water carries.

This morning I woke up on trail, at the beginning of the Sierra’s under a huge fir tree next to a nice cool stream of water.  I left camp at 6:40am and walked in the cool shade and morning breeze. A mile down the trail I walked across a bridge in the woods and started a gradual uphill for most of the morning.  I took it slow to make sure that my shin splints wouldn’t flair up. 11 miles later I was at the Kern River bridge at 11am laying in the cool water and eating lunch.

I’d sit by the river for 3 hours enjoying everyone’s company and the beautiful meadows that surrounded us all. We watched the swallows that had made mud nests under the bridge dance in and out of their little homes. Then it was time to walk again, but this was just a 5 mile hike uphill to our campsite overlooking the valley we just walked through.

I’m camped at 9775 feet and I’m so excited to be in the mountains, the trees are huge and the trail is a soft dirt duff.  Tonight my shins feel good and the slower pace allows me to keep up with the trail family while also hopefully letting my shin recover.
