May 3, Day 14: Mile 179.4-180.8
Miles Hiked: 1.4 trail miles, 2.5 miles out of Idyllwild
Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for uphill climbs. There’s something about earning a view, cresting the top a peak and seeing expansive views.
Today was chore and resupply day in Idyllwild. Would have loved to sleep in until 9 or 10 am but right at 5:30 I was awake. Started sorting through my backpack to see what I’d need to buy or if there was possibly something I could get rid of, unfortunately there was nothing to purge. Matador and I then walked to the local post office where I got my first goodies on trail from my mom and dad. THANKS!! From there it was to the grocery store to buy 2.5 days worth of food but I’m pretty sure I bought 4 days worth. Back to the Airbnb afterwards to go repackage our food, we take things out of boxes and put them in ziplock baggies. Then a quick stop at the local outfitters for some shoe inserts, going to give them a try, a second pair of toe socks and fuel canister to cook my meals.
Then Matador, Zippy and I headed to the town square to bask in the sun, while our other hiking partners Joscelyn and Landon have decided to stay one more night in the glorious town of Idyllwild.
Lunch was sushi with our new trail friends, Dunkaroo (Nathan), Biggie (Siobhan pronounced Chevon) both from Canada, Cool Cat (Eric), Clancy (Alan), and Navigator/Navi (Katie). After stuffing our faces with food we got a ride to the offshoot trailhead at 4pm in which we’d need to climb 1600 feet for 2.5 miles just to get back to trail. So we only walked about a mile and a half of PCT trail miles as we’re planning on taking an off shoot tomorrow to climb San Jacinto mountain that stands at 10834 feet. The climb back up to trail was steep but I’m so happy to be back on trail and sleeping under the stars.
Tonight we’re all cowboy camping at 8900 feet just down the trail from the cut off spur and will be heading up in the morning for epic sunrise views.
