Day 18: A big day of solitude

May 7, Day 18: Mile 230.9-256.2

Miles Hiked: 25.3

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for stillness and solitude.

A big day blur. I woke up at 4:45 like usual it seems to relieve myself and decided I might as well start packing and heading down the trail. I cut out from camp at 5:30 and climbed my way out of Mission Creek for the next 4 hours, luckily the sun was blocked by the high canyon walls and the majority of the 4 hours was walking in a balmy shade as the trail meandered back and forth across from creek. Trail finding is always interesting when it’s been washed out and sometimes you only have cairns (stacked rocks) to guide the way. By 9:45 I had already hiked 9 miles and I was at the last water source for the following 16 miles so I spread out, drank several liters of water, aired out my feet and ate lunch.

My intention today was not to walk so far, but after the morning I decided to mentally challenge myself. I knew I wanted to go 20 miles today, but was my body and mind capable of doing 25 miles (my biggest one day hike ever)?  I decided to give it a try. I’m pretty sure I zoned out for the better part of the afternoon and the water source at mile 9 would be the last time I’d see a hiker the rest of the day until camp 25.3 miles later.

Sometimes the trail is a dirt road

There’s a chill in the air, tomorrow it’s an “easy” 10 miles to the main road that leads into Big Bear where the lot of us have an Airbnb and a planner zero on Sunday. I have a package to pick up, hopefully tomorrow morning before the post office closes, otherwise it’ll be Monday morning.  Tonight I’m spoiled, I have a picnic table to sit at to eat dinner and organize my camp.
