Day 27: A long blur

May 16, Day 27: Mile 403.1-430.4

Miles Hiked: 27.3

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for sunshine that breaks through the clouds and warms you up.

The day started out cold and wet. When I cowboy camped last night at the site it was cool but then I woke at 4:30 I was in a cloud and everything was soaked including my sleeping bag. Surprisingly though, I was so warm that I was sleeping in just my bottoms so at least I know my down quilt works well. I packed in a hurry and headed off down the trail at 5am to warm up and hopefully get to a lower elevation out of the clouds. By 8 am I was sitting at a natural spring, in the sun, drinking cool crisp water and had all of my stuff laid out in the sun to dry out. They day was looking to be another big mile day with the early start.  By 12:30 I was 15.5 miles already on the day and sitting in a parking lot where there was trail magic from a Appalachian Trail thru hiker, trail name Keys and his partner Emily, who now loved in California, he had snacks, soda and beer.

It was still early afternoon when I left and I went into a little bit of an autopilot, but the overgrown trail kept me on my toes. For miles I had to squeeze between bushes with thorns or sharp leaves or crawl over huge trees that had fallen on trail. I’d do this for nearly another 12 miles until I got to Messenger Flat Campground having hiked 27.3 miles, now my biggest day yet. I did have a small reason to have such a big day. Now I only have 13 miles to hike into the Acton KOA tomorrow where I’ve rented a cabin, that has its own bathtub to soak my legs and to sleep in a bed. I’ll take a day off the next day too to rest and recover from all the big miles. My next day off won’t be until I get to Kennedy Meadows in 250 miles which should take me about 12 days.
