Day 135: Thank You Katie and Urich Cabin

September 1, Day 135: 2335.2-2356.4

Miles Hiked: 21.2

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for Katie “Navi” Desler of the Salty Butt Bandits. Quiet yet fierce she’s always “present” for a conversation but it’s just as comfortable quietly hiking with her during the day.  Her smile and laugh light up the trail and those around her.

Last night was a chilly and windy night. The campground we all stayed at was listed on Guthook’s as a 3 tent site, we had 17 tents pitched. I set my alarm to get up at 5am but when it went off I was still tired and too cold to get up, so I snoozed until 6:45 then made hot coffee in my vestibule of my tent and slowly packed.

I didn’t start hiking down the trail until 7:45am and the sky was clear and the sun was warm. The morning was mainly walking through the old Norse fire area near Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. Twelve miles down trail was the Urich Cabin and when I got there at noon there were trail angels making meatball subs on a hoagie roll.

The cabin was nestled in a beautiful meadow and many hikers sat there in the sunshine enjoying sandwiches, soda and beer. After 2.5 hours of lounging I finally packed up and the group decided to hike another 9 miles to camp. I had looked ahead and there was a logging road that paralleled the trail but was higher on the ridge and gave us beautiful views of the northern mountains we’d soon be walking through. After setting up camp, we all gathered for dinner and then got to enjoy the sunset over those mountains.
