Day 104: Seiad Valley, last Cali town

August 1, Day 104: 1634.5-1661.0

Miles Hiked: 26.5

Gratitude of the Day:  I’m thankful for when the trail is maintained and those volunteers that do that work.

This morning I woke up to deer in camp. It was an ok sleep, I just tossed and turned a lot but probably because camp was slanted. By the time 5:45 rolled around I was awake and eating my normal breakfast of pop tarts. By 6:30 I started down trail, literally down trail as we had a huge 6000 foot descent into the last town of California, Seiad Valley. I decided that I’d push all the way in to town and take only breaks for water. At 10 am I’d covered half the mileage for the day, and indeed just filtered water and ate a snack. Then back down hill, soon I hit a road and the trail for the next 6 miles was gravel and paved roads into town.  The cool part of this was I saw my second Pine Marten on trail, this one was all black. I tried to get a photo but it was too fast. I was fortunate enough to get a hitch in the back of a track for 3 miles and then got another hitch with a couple who drove me the rest of the way to the cafe before it closed. I was able to order a burger and milkshake… definitely worth the hiking push and the lucky turn of hitch events. The rest of the Salty Butt Bandits trickled in for the afternoon and soon we found ourselves walking back out of town after a quick supplemental resupply and some adult beverages. Again it was a road walk and again we were fortunate enough to get a hitch for the next 5 miles. We then all walked another mile or so to camp. So I covered 26.5 miles today, but probably only actually hiked 18-20 of those miles… which I’m ok with.
