August 2, Day 105: 1661.0-1692.0
Miles Hiked: 31
Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for crossing over into a new state, HELLO Oregon!
I got a decently early start out of camp today at 5:30 to do the 3800 foot climb before it got too hot. About 15 minutes outside of camp I got my 3rd bear sighting, it was eating berries on the side of the road and when it heard me just took off running into the woods… bears move fast, definitely never going to outrun one of those. The rest of the morning was rather uneventful and I made it to the top of the climb and at the spring by 8am. Cool Cat had gotten out early too and we hiked the last couple miles together to the spring. We stopped and got water, made some coffee and ate breakfast. Clancy wasn’t far behind and we realized that the Oregon border was only 21 miles away. So we all decided today would be our last day in California and we’d camp in Oregon tonight. The trail was an up and down fiasco for those miles climbing and dropping the rest of the day. I took a break about 8.5 miles from the border to have lunch and Cool Cat stopped with me. I took off for the border at 2:45 to do the last 8.5 miles, and it seems like everything with this trail you have to earn certain key points. The last 2 miles out of California was an uphill climb at the end of a 31 mile day, but I came around a switchback and could see the post with the California/Oregon sign, I made it!
I got to Oregon on day 105 at 5:30pm after 1694 miles. I took the requisite photos and waited for my friends. Cool Cat wasn’t too far behind and Clancy made it a little later, we stayed to welcome him into a new state. To put things in a little perspective, I’ve heard that in the distance to cover the state of California on the PCT, if I was hiking the Appalachian Trail I would have crossed through 11 states, today I’m walking into my 2nd state. I’d describe the moment had exhilarating, relieved and emotional to say the least.
