Day 115: Happy Bday Dad from trail

August 12, Day 115: 1917.6-1952.6

Miles Hiked: 35

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for my dad today his birthday. I hope he had a wonderful day and had another good year.

It was a slow start getting out of camp and mosey down the trail. For most of the morning I just walked through old growth forest but then came out into a old burn section and I got my first view do the Three Sisters to the north.

I also had service a lot of the day and I got a text from Cool Cat saying that the new fire closure from McKenzie Pass to Santiam Pass was now open, another 16 PCT miles before Bend. Now I’m behind the 8 ball, I only have enough food for McKenzie Pass and it means I need to do more miles as well. So the goal changed in the middle of the day, it was now a 35 mile day goal and to make it to Elks Lake Resort so I can grab a little more food for the extra hiking. I took lunch with Hiccups and Kitty Titty at 11:30, only stopped for 30 minutes then shot off again down trail. For the most last I just zoned out and concentrated on getting the miles. I walked by some beautiful lakes that would have been perfect for an afternoon nap and swim but onward I went. The coolest thing for me was finding old PCT blaze signs through this area.  I hiked the rest of the afternoon only stopping to filter water. Exactly at 8pm I got to the junction for Elks Lake, 35 miles later, but it’s another 1.2 miles off trail to the resort. When I got it the store was closed and doesn’t open until 9am tomorrow morning. So I set up camp, inventoried my food and caught up on my blog. I need to do 46 miles the next two days with tomorrow being a short day because of waiting for the store to open. So means I’ll probably hike into the evening again so I can get to Santiam Pass in time for Sarah to pick me up on Saturday afternoon.
