August 6, Day 109: 1718.7-1736.0
Miles Hiked: 17.3
Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for the shifting wind to clear the smoke and having blue skies and beautiful stars to enjoy at night.
Getting out of Ashland today took awhile like it usually does. After a slow start to the morning and a lot of coffee Cool Cat and I walked to the man drag of Ashland and nabbed a hitch to trail with little effort. By the time I started down trail it was 1pm and blazing hot. Fortunately for most of the day the trail stayed in old growth trees. My plan was to hike 15-20 miles, and then the next two days to do fairly big mile days to set me up to get to Crater Lake by mid afternoon on Monday and hopefully to see my friends that are in the area. The day wasn’t much exciting, a couple of good views south of Mt Shasta and I could see the smoke plume of the Boot Leg Fire burning to the east. Zippy, Huck, Pony Boy and I stopped to have dinner at a small paved highway and we found out that some of the crew hitched 32 miles ahead, we’d been wondering where they were, haha now we’re behind. We walked up the road a little bit and are all cowboy camped under a beautiful night sky. I can see the Milky Way and saw a shooting star as I set up camp. Hopefully tomorrow my legs will feel better, today they were sluggish and just didn’t seem very comfortable walking. Not every day on trail is the best, sometimes it seems like a job to get up every day and hike miles.
