Day 106: A Smokey Endeavor

August 3, Day 106: 1692.0-1717.7

Miles Hiked: 25.7

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for being able to walk a lot of the trail and avoiding the fires. So far I’ve been fortunate enough to just be ahead of them.

I woke up this morning and it was still fairly dark at 5:30, mainly from the smoke that’s blown in overnight and I could see small particles of ash coming down. Today the plan is to get into Callahans a lodge right off I-5 and just outside of Ashland. Supposedly they have an all you can eat pasta and you get a free hiking beer. So this motivated me to walk through the day with taking minimal breaks, but by 2pm I’d covered 21 miles and needed to stop to rest, so a quick 30 minute break and back at it. By 4pm I walked into the parking and found out that the kitchen was closed because of the lack of staff.  Luckily they were still serving beer and had some pre-made turkey sandwiches.

The day was overall good, the smoke from the fires makes it seem like you’re chain smoking cigarettes all day. It makes it cooler because it blocks out the sun though, so I guess find the positive. Once Cool Cat and Clancy showed up they too got a beer and then we decided to get into Ashland for food. A trail angel gave us a ride into town and we were eating yummy food and having beer.
