Day 67: Walking with a hangover

June 25, Day 67: 945.1-965.1

Miles Hiked: 20.0

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful today for my trekking poles. I remember when I first started hiking and seeing people use them, I thought they were so silly. Now, they’re probably one of my favorite pieces of gear, mainly because they have saved my so many times from falling or helped prevent rolling my ankles.

This morning was a little late start after staying up at backpacker camp in Tuolumne Meadows. By the time I was packed up and walking out of the campground it was nearly 8:30. Today the goal was to get 20 miles.  The first 5 miles was a rather lazy start to the day which was nice, I walked past Soda Springs, a carbonated natural spring that tastes like nickel. Then my first break was with Huck and Shakedown at Tuolumne Falls, so beautiful.

I’d follow the Tuolumne river for the next several miles until it split off and I was walked in a wide open meadow which turned out to be the perfect spot of lunch break. Here Baewatch and Colonel Sanders joined us.

After a lazy lunch in the meadow It was back on trail to finish the 11 miles to camp. I’d stop every so often and take my pack off and soak my feet in the clear beautiful streams along the way. Then it was a switchback climb up to Miller Lake where I decided to eat dinner before getting to camp 3 miles down trail. After the lake the trail dropped 1200 feet in under two miles into a valley with Matterhorn Creek. The trail follows the creek in the valley which is where I’m camped tonight. This is also a great setup point for tomorrow as in the morning it’s a climb up Benson Pass.
