July 10, Day 82: 1167.0-1195.4
Miles Hiked: 28.4
Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for my brother. We’re not the closest, he’s reserved and quiet and I’m outgoing and loud. But it was nice having a sibling to hang out with and play games with growing up.
Bright and early, 4am alarm, one snooze and then it was time to beat the heat, taking off from camp at 4:45am. The sunrise was beautiful and I could see the fire plume outside of Quincy, luckily the fire isn’t close to the trail. The rest of the morning was spent hiking. I stopped around 9am to filter water and then was back to hiking. The goal was to make it into Sierra City before 5:30 when the general store closes. By noon i had hiked 21 miles, but the heat had arrived and I was tired. I nestled under a tree for shade and took off my shoes for a bit. Then at 12:30 I continued down the trail until I reached an amazing cool stream and drank a ton of water, soaked my feet and switched out my socks that were soaked from all the sweat.
After a nice break I felt rejuvenated and finished the last 4.5 miles, even swimming at a nice swimming hole right at the road to hitch into Sierra City. I made it into town with plenty of time to spare, resupplied, got a burger, drank 3 ice cold comes, a pink lemonade, a milkshake and a beer. Now I’m cowboy camping behind a local church tonight, tomorrow will be another early day to beat the heat. There’s a large climb out of Sierra city and I don’t want to do it in the heat of the day.
