Day 78: Dinger to the eye and Gumby legs

July 6th, Day 78: 1125.7-1144.4

Miles Hiked: 18.7

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for being able to see :)

This morning I woke up at 5:15 but didn’t feel motivated to get out of camp, so I took a picture of the sunrise over Lake Tahoe and crawled back in my tent until 6:15 when everyone else was starting to stir. By the time I’d packed everything up and hiked out of camp with Huck and Catch it was 7:30. The plan today was to just take it easy and that’s exactly what we did. There was some elevation gain as we walked on the back side of Alpine Ski Resort and Squaw Ski Resort.

By noon we’d only covered 10 miles and decided to take a break from the sun by a small stream and in a shaded campsite.  We all laid down and took a nap in the shade after eating lunch until around 2pm, then it was back at it but now a lot of uphill on an exposed ridge with yellow flowers and the sun. For some reason today my body didn’t feel like hiking and my legs felt like I was walking in quick sand. I just felt so slow, but still made the miles. By 6:30 we’d made camp and had dinner.

Then we played home-run derby in the meadow. The game ended when I was pitching to Huck and he hit a line drive that smacked me right in the left eye. At first I was worried that my eye was ruptured because it was a dinger of a hit.  Once it was established that it wasn’t and that I wasn’t blind it was a good life and that was the end of home-run derby for tonight. Next was Bocce Ball, Huck and I vs Catch and Rugrat. We handily beat them. To end the night we tossed the frisbee and then it was time to crawl into bed. Tomorrow will be a short day into Truckee where I have a package to pick up at the post office and then taking a zero before getting back on trail.
