Day 81: a slow start out of Truckee

July 9, Day 81: 1154.4-1167.0

Miles Hiked: 12.6

Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for the beautiful flowers along the trail. Occasionally we walk thru open meadows just filled with bright orange, yellow, purple and white flowers that just smell amazing. Stop and smell the flowers for sure.

Today was back to trail out of Truckee. My package now is being sent to Chester, so I got that all figured out. The Salty Butt Bandits didn’t come into town so now they’re ahead, so my intentions today was to do 25 miles or more to try to catch up with them. About 1.5 miles into the day low and behold I found Clyde and Cool Cat off trail, Cool Cat was massively hungover and Clyde was plying him with water.

What a funny sight to see and it was nice to catch up with them since it’s been awhile since I’ve seen them. 4 miles in we stopped at the rest area off I-80 and the was a thru hiker from 2015 named St John the Baptist hanging out food and beer. So Clyde and I enjoyed the beer and Cool Cat took another nap in the shade.

After a long time spent here, it was the goal to hike to the Peter Grub Hut in 3 miles and check it out. Here we went back and forth about whether to stay or not, finally deciding to hike another 6.5 miles to White Rock Creek. Along the way I caught up with Catch and stopped to have dinner with her. Her shins are hurting and I can sympathize, she’s taking the miles easy through this section to try not to hurt them any more. After dinner I hiked the additional 3 miles to camp.
