June 26, Day 68: 965.1-988.1
Miles Hiked: 23.0
Gratitude of the Day: I’m thankful for my friend John Syx. I call him Sherpa Sunshine, he’s one of those friends that would be there at a moment’s notice and one that enjoys traveling and backpacking. I’m looking forward to the next camping trip.
I woke up at 5:15 this morning and started packing up my stuff as I sat in my sleeping bag because it was chilly. By the time I left camp it was 6am. Today’s plan is to make it Wilma Lake some 23 miles away. A tall order if I did it since we’d go over 4 passes gaining over 6000 feet and losing 6000 feet. The first pass was the biggest, Benson Pass, a long switchback slog for 3.5 miles. Then back down the other side. One of “problems” with being in the high Sierra’s is that now as I’m about to leave the Sierra section things are as “beautiful”.
Yet, today I walked by some amazing green meadows, several lakes, even had lunch at one that had a perfect granite catwalk out into the lake that was perfect to dive off. The roller coaster day continued, back up and back down three more times. Finally at 7pm myself and my closest 1000 mosquitoes arrived at Wilma Lake. The final up and down hill was brutal but it turned out to be a good day of miles. After making dinner, I ate in my tent to escape the massive swarm of mosquitoes.
